Andy Baio : Kevin Kelly and Brian Eno predict unthinkable futures from 1993 - "it costs half a day's pay to drive your car into the downtown area of a big city"
philgyford : Conceptual Trends and Current Topics - Unthinkable Futures - I like this kind of "thinking the unthinkable" as a way to come up with new ideas about what the future could be. So easy to get stuck thinking about the most likely outcomes otherwise.

philgyford : MUTO a wall-painted animation by BLU - I generally think graffiti is just selfish vandalism, including this, but it's still an impressive feat - a long stop-motion animation using graffiti. Must have taken an age. (via Kevin Kelly)

Andy Baio : Kevin Kelly on 1,000 true fans - this model for indie creators is a natural use of the Internet, but still rare
philgyford : Kevin Kelly - The Technium - 1,000 True Fans - The idea that you only need a relatively small number of people willing to pay you occasionally for your work in order to make a living. (Stewart Lee suggested he needed 7,000 fans in 2005.)
deusx : Kevin Kelly -- The Technium - "I don't know the actual true number, but I think a dedicated artist could cultivate 1,000 True Fans, and by their direct support using new technology, make an honest living. I'd love to hear from anyone who might have settled on such a path."
Rod Begbie : Kevin Kelly -- 1,000 True Fans - "Anyone producing works of art needs to acquire only 1,000 True Fans to make a living." Discussed this over lunch today, and could definitely think of a handful of bands I'd pay $10-a-month to "patronize". [via] #

plasticbag : Kevin Kelly's review of Scan Café is interesting for those of us who have considered bringing all our old photos into the 21st Century... - I think I'll give them a go once I've finally made the move to the US.
nelson : Scan Cafe - cheap bulk scanning
Rod Begbie : Cool Tool: ScanCafe - I've been looking for a cost-effective way of converting our wedding photo negatives into digital files for a while, and this looks like it might be the way to go. $0.19 per negative. #

plasticbag : The Cintiq—as described on Kevin Kelly's site—is basically a combination tablet and monitor that allows you to do illustration work in a way that resembles working on paper - There's a substantial chunk of writing on the page from Scott McCloud talking about how he uses it too. It looks pretty extraordinary, actually. Wouldn't mind one of those, although god knows what I'd use it for.
